By using a small painless laser, decay is detected in its earliest state.  No longer having to wait for decay to show up on pictures means smaller preparations and more tooth structure is preserved.  By running the laser over your teeth, a density value is given.  Any number over a 20 indicates decay is present and the tooth needs a filling.  Larger numbers usually indicate large cavities.

Ultrasonic scalers are a specialized tool used to clean your teeth.  Utilizing a vibrating tip with a lavage of water or antibacterial solution, your teeth and gums are cleaned and rinsed of plaque and calculus.  Patients in general prefer this method in comparison to using hand instruments only.
